Today is the birthday of Edith Wharton (1862-1937) in New York City. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1921 for The Age of Innocence, Wharton was the first woman to receive an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Yale University and the Gold Medal of the National Institute of Arts and Letters.

I love her books – I can’t decide which is my favourite. I think her descriptions of interiors are always gorgeous, but then she was a designer too and I think you can tell. She obviously delighted in picturing the scene to place her characters.

The good news, it seems, is that Wharton’s gorgeous mansion in western Massachusetts is still open – despite talks of it closing down due to massive debt. I highly recommend a visit to her home as soon as possible, before it’s no longer possible!
